Detailed description
Option 1: Self-driving (recommended, flexible approach)
The core attractions of the Ailao Mountains are scattered, and the mountain roads twist and turn—making a self-drive tour the perfect way to experience them. The main route typically follows National Highway G215 (formerly Provincial Road S307).
Classic self-drive route (starting from Kunming):
Kunming → Yuxi → Xinping County → Jiasa Town (Accommodation)
Distance: Approximately 280 kilometers
Duration: Approximately 4–5 hours
Road conditions: Highway throughout the entire route plus excellent national roads—conditions are superb.
Jiasa Town → Ailao Mountain Core Scenic Area (One-Day Circular Route)
Starting from Jiasa Town, head uphill along National Highway G215 toward Zhenyuan County. Along the way, you’ll pass by the following major attractions, which can be visited in sequence:
Nam Eun Falls: Right by the roadside, free to view.
Shimen Gorge: A must-visit attraction with crystal-clear water and a deeply serene canyon.
The Ancient Tea Horse Road: Experience the Echoes of History.
Jinshan Primitive Forest: A perfect spot for hiking and soaking in fresh oxygen.
Ailao Mountain Cloud Sea Viewing Platform: A perfect spot to witness the breathtaking sea of clouds (usually in the early morning).
Longxi Noble Family Estate: Discover the Local Tusi Culture.
Vehicle recommendation: Any standard family sedan is suitable, provided road conditions are good. However, be cautious during the rainy season, as there may be falling rocks.
Option 2: Public Transportation + Charter/Shared Ride
This method is more roundabout but perfect for backpackers with plenty of time on their hands.
Step: Arrive at Gasha Town (transit point)
Departing from Kunming:
Take the shuttle bus to Jiasha Town at Kunming South Bus Station. Daily departures are limited, and the journey takes approximately 5–6 hours.
Alternatively, first take the shuttle bus to Xinping County (which has frequent departures), then transfer to a minivan or small bus in Xinping County to reach Jiasa Town (about 30 minutes).
Departing from Yuxi:
Take a shuttle bus from Yuxi Bus Station bound for Xinping County or directly to Jiasa Town.
Step 2: Take a minivan up the mountain in Gasha Town
After arriving in Jiasa Town, you’ll find plenty of drivers offering private car services. You can hire a vehicle—usually a van or a compact car—to take you on a tour of all the attractions mentioned above.
Cost: Depending on the vehicle type and duration of your trip, a full-day chartered car typically costs around 300–500 yuan, though prices are negotiable. If you're traveling alone, consider reaching out to other tourists in town to arrange a ride-share and split the expenses.
Option 3: Group Tour
If you’d rather not plan your own itinerary, you can join a 2-day or 3-day tour group departing from Kunming or Yuxi to Ailao Mountain–Shimen Gorge. This option is convenient and hassle-free, though it offers less flexibility.

Important note:
Best seasons: During the rainy season (June–August), enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls and lush greenery; in the dry season (November to April), you’ll have a higher chance of witnessing stunning sea-of-clouds panoramas as well as breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
Accommodation: It’s recommended to stay in Jiasa Town, where you’ll find a wide selection of hotels and restaurants—making it the perfect base for exploring the Ailao Mountains. There are also a few small-scale farm stays available on the mountain itself.
Dining: Be sure to try the Dai-style hot pot from Jiasa Town (featuring yellow beef as the main ingredient)—it’s a local culinary specialty.
Itinerary Suggestion: We recommend planning at least a 2-day, 1-night trip. Start your journey from Kunming and check into a hotel in Jiasa Town. On the second day, spend the entire day exploring the Ailao Mountain scenic area, then return to your accommodation in the evening—or continue on to your next destination.
